Hello! I just wanted to give you all some encouragement. I was a preemie myself 32 years ago (2 lbs and 10 oz) and recently had a preemie daughter at 7 months--3 lbs and 4 oz due to pre-eclampsia. She's doing great and was never on a respirator. The docs are amazed at how mature and healthy she is for a baby born at 30 weeks gestation.
Medicine caring for preemies is so much better than it was when I was born, so take heart. My mom was only 6.5 months with me and I have never had any physical or learning problems. When I got pregnant I was training for a marathon & have a Master's degree and have always done well in school & I started school according to my numberical age. Believe in your preemies!! I'm proof that preemies can be just like any full term baby.

I found out that I had pre-eclampsia when I was almost 30 weeks pregnant My Bp was 175/115 and I had major swelling in the legs and feet, which I assumed was perfectly normal until my sister noticed(She recognized it because she had eclampsia and a seizure after giving birth to her son). She made me get my blood pressure checked that day at the nearest walmart and called the doctor and they insisted I come in right away which I did and was admitted that night(8/14/05) and diagnosed with Pre-E. My BP Levels were high and uncontrollable for 4 days, they gave me medicine every thirty minutes and nothing worked. They monitored me closely and on the 4 night I woke up in the hospital with a really bad headache and when I woke up, I realized I couldn't see. I lost my vision suddenly for four days which was really scary and they did an emergency C-Section(8/18/2005). I found out later that I had brain swelling which caused the vision loss and also had fluid on my lungs. My daughter weighed 2 pounds 8 ounces and was breathing on her own and doing really well to be born so early. She is now 3 pounds 9 ounces as of 8/19/05 and still in the hospital.Hopefully, she will be home within a couple of weeks, once her apnea spells have disappeared. I am so lucky to be alive because many women have died from pre-E. Good luck to you all and pray for your babies, trust me..it works
My name is Angela and I am the mother of a preemie. My daughter Alexandra Storm was born 7 weeks early on Oct. 15th because of pre-eclampsia. She was 3 lb. 6 oz. at birth. Healthy, but small. She was in the hospital for one month and one day. She is a cutie, but she is so unlike my other two kids when they were infants. One was 6.12 and one was 10.00 at birth. SHe doesent really smile or anything yet, and sleeps horribly at night. She is a challenging baby but I love her dearly. The drs say to expect her to develop a little later than most babies, but that is so hard to accept. SHe almost killed me to have her, and I am so scared something will happen to her. I had to have my tubes tied so she is the last one. my dr said if I had another one it would kill us both. It's hard to deal with at times. Is anyone out there like me in this?
Hello there! I had my son Joseph at 29 weeks due to pre eclampsia. Unfortunately I was not diagnosed until the disease became very severe, was admitted to the hospital and one week later had a very severe abruption of the placenta. My blood pressure was skyrocketing! I was knocked out and taken to surgery. The doctors tell us that the abruption was so large that there was a blood clot about 1/3 the size of the placenta by the time Joseph was delivered. IN addition, the doctor feared that he may have to perform a hysterictomy because much of the blood flow that exited the body had backed up into the muscle fibers of the utereus. Thankfully the utereus did " spring" back into shape and no further surgery was done. The pre eclampsia was terrible!! My blood vessles were leaking so much protein that the docs feared I might have damage to the kidneys or to the liver. IN fact, I was so severe after the abruption that I was in bed for 4 days after the surgery getting doses of Magnesium sulfate and albumerin to reduce the blood pressure and to pump a large amount of protein back into the body. Joseph was very critical after deliveryk. The lungs were not fully developed even after the steroid shots. His physician told us later in the day that they were not sure if he was going to survive or not. He remained very critical for about a month. He was on a vent, cpap, oxygen and several medications. He spent a total of 85 long hard days in the NICU, and came home on oxygen. IN addition, he had a blood clot, a hernia, is a carrier for cystic fibrosis, and has seen several other specialists. Needless to say I have been advised to consider another pregnancy. Hope this info helps you. for the most part Joseph is healing and d oing well and I too recovered well from the sickness and surgery. I feel for you! Very few women know how dangerous pre eclampsia is,as well as the dangers and consequences. At least we know we can no longer take any days for granted!
forgot to mention but I will be thinking of all of you. I too feel very frightened about Josephs development. He is now 6 months old ( 3 adjusted) and is behind is peers in progress. This is very hard to accept!! Again, very few people understand how sick our son was and how hypersensitive preemies can be. Dad and I jsut try to work very hard with him daily and we continue to see progress one day at a time

hello. I too had severe preeclampsia. My b/p went up to 190/120. I had multiple IV's and many people had to come and try to stick me for blood but was unable to because of my swelling. My boy was born at 32 6/7 weeks. He was 3 lbs 13 oz and 17 inches long. Even though he was 7 weeks early, he is pretty much where he is supposed to be at developmentally. He brings so much joy in my life as well as my husband. I think to myself that if I had to go through it all over again just to have him, I would.

I, too developed pre-enclampsia and delivered my son at 30.4 weeks gestation. He weighed 2lbs. 12 ozs. The silver lining is that I have the child I've longed for which makes the extra work manageable. He did not require oxygen so it appears the steriod injections I rec'd helped tremendously.
My son remained in the NICU for just over 5 weeks and has been home about 3 weeks. He is needy little guy, but very much loved. I do carry some level of guilt for the circumstances (although clearly pre-enclampsia was beyond my control). I think women/families who have experienced this will require a good level of support from various resources for some time to come. We will make it.

Just wanted to let you know that I had preeclampsia twice...the first misdiagnosed for gall bladder. The boys are now 16 and 12 and the best advice is to hold them back from school a year when that time comes. i did with the first who was 2 lbs 12 oz and born 6 weeks early and surprisingly the 12 yr old who was born at 25 1/2 weeks 1lb 14 oz did not want to be held back. Wish I would have as it's been harder for him. The younger one had all of the preemie problems but you just pray and deal and with the internet there is so much more information available. Both boys are doing well in school and developmentally. I'm a big believer in baby massage therapy and also as they get older Brain Gym. There's a lot to be said for that. Hope your baby is doing fine. I came across this site looking up info for friends that just had a preemie. Good luck to you. Nancy
I have been there too. I had three healthy pregnancies (preterm labor but no blood pressure issues) and then this year with my fourth I developed high blood pressure and then had protein in my urine and then had horrible headaches and neurological changes. I had my daughter Ella at 25 weeks and she weighed 1 lb 2 oz. She is now up to 2 lb 12 oz 7 weeks later. She is finally off the ventilator and on CPAP. It has been a long hard road and I had to have a tubal on Thursday since they said the chances of my surviving another pregnancy were 0%. Everyone keeps telling me of course I should have one and I knew it was the logical choice but it was still hard for me. So I understand what you are going through. Thanks for sharing. Natalie
Just wanted to let all of the mothers of preemies on the website that 4 years ago I had a 1 pound 3 ounce baby girl at 26 weeks who has grown into a wonderful, happy, perfectly normal 4 yr old. Now she has a brother who is also a 1 pound 3 ounce 26 week preemie just born last week. Its difficult to remember just how hard and heartbreaking it is to go through this until you have to do it again. I just know that to have my two beautiful children I would do it all again even though I would never wish this experience on my worst enemy. Just remember it is the hardest thing you will ever have to cope with but it is worth it in the end.

It is a comfort to know that your 26 week old preemie is now 4 years old. My son was born 7 weeks ago at 26 weeks, weighing 2lbs. He is still in intensive care, and alternating between CPAP and lowflow oxygen, after being on the ventilator for 4 weeks and having an operation at 3 weeks old to close a duct. I am sorry to hear that you have another 26 week preemie though now, as I know how hard and heartbreaking it is. I wish you all the best. As you say though, they are worth it - absolutely!
My little girl was born at 31 weeks and was 2 pound 6 ounces. You can read our story and see our pictures on this site. Just click stories and pictures at the top. Feel free to leave a comment in our guest book. http://www.babyhomepages.net/gracewheeler

Re:Eclampsia Stories/MED INDUCED

Hi there-
My little girl was born 10 years ago at 25 weeks... due to eclampsia which I think was cause by my migrine med... that the doctor had given me. The med is now off the market. It was Midrin or Duridrin. It can cause every symptom of eclampisa. My BP was 250/191 when I got the the hospital. My little girl was on the vent for 2 1/2 years with a trach for 3 years. She has cerbral palesy and a feeding tube. She is mentally about 7 years old but learning. I was never ask about 'saving' her ... they said she would be a vegtable but when the doctors were done they said take her home. For some parents it is about quality of live not always quanity. Some of our kids are not so lucky..... to be perfect after the doctors are done making there 3 million dollars. Families should have rights. Kristina, in SC
Hi, I lost my dad on January 17th in Michigan. I was 7 months pregnant and under a whole lot of stress. I had to be off of work because of pain I was having in my lower abdomen. Well, on February 12th I went down state to visit my sister and 2 brothers to go through some of dads estate. Well, that night my ankles swolled up so fast, I looked like a 1000 pd woman....I propped them up for a few hours wich helped the swolling somewhat. But I could not get to sleep on my sisters couch because I had such a severe headache like I have never experienced before. I woke her up and told her to call 911. They came and got my by then, I was experiencing pain (placental abruption) and just wanted to be put out of pain. I was delerious. They did emergency c-section 20 minutes after I had arrived in the ambulance, she was born weighing 3 pds and 16 inches long. I then had 2 seizures, quit breathing had to be intubated and put on a ventilator for 3 days. I also had developed HELLP syndrome elevated liver enzymes and low platellets, so I had 3 blood transfusions and platelettes. It was a long road. Then had Marissa transferred back to our home town via ambulance 200 miles. I had severe post traumatic stress, anxiety, post partum. Had to be put on antidepressants for panic attacks. But all is going good now, thanks to God. We are home she is growing like a weed and getting prettier by the day. http://preemie.info/cms/uploads/smil3e847831c56a2.gif
I also had a baby boy born 14 weeks early. At 26 2/7 weeks I gave birth to Azarias Eli Fortson. He was 2pounds 1 ounce. He early birth was unknown. I had to have an emergeny C section and he was breeched. Currently he is 2 months old and doing great. He is off oxygen, in a open crib and taking a regular bottle 3 time a day. Hopefully he will be home by his original due date, June 18. Be strong parents, your babies need you!
