Bilateral Periventricular Leukomalacia (also known as PVL) means that the areas surrounding the ventricles in the child's brain have been damaged, or scarred. The ventricles are the 2 open areas on the top of the brain. In MRI scans of babies with PVL, these areas appear larger than usual. The larger they appear, the worse the damage around them is. Leukomalacia is referring to the white tissue matter surrounding the ventricles. This just means that this white tissue matter has scarring, or cysts, and is damaged. This can cause vision problems if the damage reaches the optic areas of the brain. Often children with PVL have damage to the Cerebellum, located at the lower back of the brain. Cerebellum damage can cause problems with swallowing, self-regulating, balance, muscle tone, gross motor skills (walking, running, etc), and sometimes speech and language development.
